HANDS ON FUN WITH TEMPERATURE..WE MADE JUICE POPS IN CLASS!

We used the thermometers to read a few temperatures while experimenting and discovered:

Classroom =  + 20 Celcius

A student’s body temp = +30 Celcius

Frozen Juice Concentrate = -15 Celcius

Juice Concentrate mixed with tap water = +2 celcius

Juice Pop before placing in freezer (unfrozen) = +10 Celcius

IMG_20141205_102018019Next, students took made an estimate of the amount of time it would take the juice pops to freeze in (-18 freezer temp):

12 people estimated that it will take 1 hour to freeze our pops!

7 people estimated that it will take 3 hours to freeze our pops!

The 7 students who guessed 3 HOURS, were correct!

Dividing Mrs. Hill’s Birthday Cake (Math Problem)

The day after my birthday, I explained that many visitors dropped by my house to see me on my birthday and that I had a cake to share with them.

The cake needed to be divided into equal portions for sharing with my guests. So I gave them all many rectangular pieces of paper and challenged them to figure out how I would need to divide the cakes equally between:  2 people, 3 people, 4 people, 5 people, 6 people, 7 people, 8 people, 9 people and 10 people.

Here are some photos of what they came up with after working in pairs:

Games to Review Addition/Subtraction

Addition Quick Draw

2 players

Getting Ready
Deal out all of the cards to the two players.
Play the Game
One player calls, ‘Draw’ and both players turn over their top card
and place it face up in the center.
The players add the two numbers that are showing and the first
player to say the total out loud wins the two cards.
After all cards have been used, the players count the number of
cards that they have won. The winner is the person who has the
most cards.

Make 25 With 5

2 – 4 players

Getting Ready
Each player is dealt 5 cards to hold in their hand.
The remaining cards are placed face down in a pile in the center.
The top card is turned over and placed beside the pile.
Play the Game
The aim of each round is to create a hand of 5 cards that add to 25.
Players take it in turn to pick up the top card of the pile or the top
card of the discard pile. Each player finishes their turn by discarding
a card onto the top of the discard pile.
The first player to have a set of 5 cards that total 25 calls out,
‘Twenty-five’ and is the winner of that round.
Keep score of how many rounds each player wins.
The winner is the player who wins the most rounds.

Don’t have someone to play with right now? That’s alight, just choose an online game below:

‘Just believe in yourself!’

http://www.dogonews.com/2013/8/18/caines-cardboard-arcade-may-be-closed-but-its-legacy-lives-oncaines

After watching this video,  our grade 3 and 4 students were thrilled to try a cardboard challenge in class. Many came in with boxes and cartons on Friday and we have actually started to construct our games in class. We now have plenty so please do not send any more cardboard to school.

Although the Global Cardboard Challenge (which invites kids around the world to design and build awesome creations using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination) culminates in a global Day of Play on October 5th, 2013,  we have chosen to build right now. We will continue to work on our games everyday in class before Open House. Hopefully, they will be ready for parents and guardians to “test out”  by Thursday night and celebrate the creativity and imagination of the students in our classroom.

Thank you!

Sincerely, Mrs. Hill
